Make the most from your solar
Applying for government rebates is a great way to reclaim money spent on a range of renewable energy systems.
Whether you’re installing a solar system on your home for the first time or you’re a business looking to switch to a renewable source of energy, there are plenty of options to save money on sustainable energy systems. With government rebates readily available, you can reduce the cost at point of sale or post-installation.

What is the ORER?
The Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator functions to oversee the Large-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (LRES) and the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
Take a look at the current government rebates available below.
Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES)
What is it?
The Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) offers small-scale technology certificates (STCs) for a system’s estimated power generation. The aim of the SRES is to reduce greenhouse gases in the electricity sector and incentivise the installation of small-scale sustainable energy systems, including solar roof systems, solar water heating, heat pumps and more. Offer is valid until 2030.
How it Works:
If you are eligible for the SRES you will be issued a Small-scale Technology Certificate, or STC. This is a tradable commodity attached to eligible installations of renewable energy systems. A set number of STCs may be claimed, depending on a number of factors, such as generated and displaced electricity, geographical location, what you are installing etc.
The number of eligible STCs can be determined using the ORES calculator. Once obtained, you can assign your STCs to a Registered Agent who will exchange financial benefits for the certificates.
Ensure your system is installed correctly and working properly before assigning any certificates to an Agent.
The agent will supply you with a STC Assignment Form for you to complete. This assigns the certificates and claim benefits. Other documentation may be provided with signatures required as part of the eligibility process. These certificates will then be sold off through the STC online system called the REC Registry.
You can opt out of using an Agent however you will need to undertake all the paperwork and legwork yourself, however, it becomes extremely complex. To learn more about this process, click here.
Eligibility Criteria:
You can check if your solar water heater or heat pump is eligible for STCs by searching the Register of Solar Water Heaters.
Eligible solar panel systems will have their components listed on the Clean Energy Council list of accredited components and will need to have been installed by a Clean Energy Council accredited installer.
STCs must also be created within 12 months of your system being installed.

Large-scale Renewable Energy Target (LRET)
Exclusively for larger renewable energy setups, Large-scale Renewable Energy Target (LRET) incentives provide Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGCs) for electricity generated through renewable power sources. This is available to both businesses and individuals until 2030.
