Safety Switches Save Lives

Safety switches, or Residual-Current Devices (RCDs), are another life saving electrical device that should be installed in every home.

In fact since 1992 by law safety switches have had to be installed in new Queensland homes.

Pre-1992 homes can easily have a safety switch installed. This is generally a simple exercise that a licensed electrician can install at the switchboard for your home.

What is a Safety Switch?
Simply put, a safety switch monitors the electricity supply for a home looking for a problem which may pose a risk to personal safety. If it detects such a problem, it turns off the power off within 0.03 of a second.

A safety switch greatly reduces the risk that a family member will electrocute themselves, for example, from a damaged appliance, by dropping their hairdryer in water, or accidently cutting a power lead.

Circuit Breakers
Circuit breakers are not the safe things as safety switches. They will not protect your family from electric shock. They are designed to protect against overloaded circuits (eg. when you have too many appliances connected to a power point).

Rental Homes
By law, all rental homes in Queensland, regardless of age, must be fitted with safety switches.
